Faroe Islands 2021-3

Faroe Islands 2021

In 2021, I was able to reach one of my minor travel goals and see Faroe Islands. I cannot lie, I'm a sucker for Northern countries and spending my summer vacation in a more moderate climate. The average of 14*C while travelling, unpredictable weather, awesome views (when you actually can see them), lots of sheep poo, yeah, all the good stuff. ;) I wanted to go there for a while and finally made it!

I started checking the destination around March-April. At that time there was no possibility to book ferry (it was only running for cargo) and once I checked costs of flight and renting a car and summing all other costs I decided it was too much (as I wanted to go by myself) and started looking for other options. I wasn't to eager to book anything too soon as travel regulations would change quite often. Around 3 weeks before my actual departure I did check ferries again, and this time option for passenger car was available. I happily booked it, as well as a place on a camping site in Torshavn and started packing. :)

Day 6

Time to visit another iconic place on Vágar island, the "floating lake". Or at least I thought it was the time.. I drove to the place, bought the ticket for access to hiking trail, stopped few times while walking to photograph birds.. But when I was getting close to the cliffs, it became pretty clear that I won't see sh*t due to fog. I at least enjoyed photographing birds. :)

After coming back to the car I checked nearby Bøur village, it's also pretty famous with grass roof houses and the rocks in the background. If you can see them. ;) In the end I drove to Gásadalur and made few photos of Múlafossur waterfall.

Day 7

I drove through that long underwater tunnel.. Costly. ;) Given how close everything is, it wasn't really worth the price.

I started the day with going through Toftir to Nes vindmøllepark, which gave a really nice view on the area. I was again lucky with weather.

I then went through Runavík, then to Klaksvík and climber Klakkur. Klakkur may not be as tall as Slættaratindur, but the views are equally stunning. After I came back down, I treated myself with some local fish&chips, which was good. :)

In the end I went for another picturesque route - from Hvannasund to Múli. Terrible road conditions, but worth it. I was a bit late in the day (even though the sun didn't fully come down at night, at the time I was there), and I had a lot of shadows on one side. I decided I will come back to this road for more pics.

Day 8

I have spent most of the day at the camping site, resting, watching movies, it was raining at ugly outside, so I figured - hey, I can have a slow day!

Day 9

Second attempt to see "floating lake", this time successful. I must say, that the man, who charged for entry, was kind enough to let me in on the same ticket that I had from 2 days prior, because I couldn't really see the attraction then. Thank you good man. :) I had much better weather this time, so I saw everything that was to see at this place. I must say the view in person is much better than on photos. :) Additionally, I again very much enjoyed the company of eurasian whimbrels. They are loud, also not too timid.

After this hike, I went again to Saksun. The view this time was much better. I walked around the village and then went to the beach (paid, private road).

Day 10

I went to see Hellurnar and Oyndarfjørður. Their location is absolutely gorgeous, woth the view. Then, since I was near I once again drove up to Elduvík, to see more without the fog, that was there last time. ;)

Then again I took the picturesque route from Funningur to Eiði. When I stopped at one point on this route to take few pictures, a couple that parked there came to say "hi". They saw my car plates and it turned out, they live just couple of kilometers from me! That was interesting. :) We chatted for a few minutes and then went in opposite directions.

In the end of the day, I came back to the route from Hvannasund to Múli, I was a bit earlier this time and took a few photos. In the end I sopped at Hvannasund for a moment.

Day 11

It was a bad weather day all over the place. I walked around Torshavn, looking for some souvenirs. I had trouble finding something that is not a wool sweater or wool beanie. In the end I bought few small cans of local beer and cider, additionally I got two fridge magnets, one for myself and one for my sis. I didn't take my camera with me, so no pics.

Day 12

Yes, the thing I was really looking for - trip to Mykines to see puffins! I took local ferry from Sørvágur and arrived at Mykines not too much later. It was very cold and foggy unfortunately. I took a little walk around the island, waiting for the people to disperse a little around the place.

Then I went to see those little, too cute, too adorable birds. I basically sat down at the edge of the local colony and stayed there for couple of hours. I observed them, letting my heart fill with that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when seeing a little kitten or puppy. There were so many of them and they really didn' care too much. You stay 5m away? Fine! You sit 3m away? Still fine! Maybe don't come closer, but other than that I am gonna sleep right there on the grass. So darn cute..

There is one downside from doing a one-day trip to the island. There isn't really much place to hide if the weather is really bad. In the high season it is best to book the ticket beforehand, so you don't know how the aura will be. With cold, windy and very moist condition I had enough around 6 hours, barely could feel my hands. The only place to sit and wait for the ferry back to the main island, is a little caffee that can fit maybe up to 10 people. Caffee was great (I had a cup of nice, warm cocoa), but I don't think you could actually sit there for like 3-4 hours if you don't want to sit with puffins on the edge of the cliff. So it's something to consider before going (pack warm clothes).

The hanged bridge to the Mykineshólmur was closed (under renovation), no gannets. :(

Check out local internet cameras for weather, because it could be very different on two sides of the tunnel.
